Head of Materials Engineering (research & technology)
Location: Columbus IN
Research and Technology Division in Columbus (IN) lead the Materials
Engineering department
using metallurgy, engine fluids, and catalyst technology. The candidate
is expected to have in-depth knowledge in at least one of the major areas
covered and some experience with the remaining areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
' Set the short and long term vision for Materials Engineering research for
the corporation by understanding the product requirements, determining what
technology will be needed, and developing projects that deliver the
technology.
' Transition materials engineering research into product through
collaborative work with design, analysis, and product development groups.
' Establish and promote best practices and technical communication
' Coach the people in Materials Engineering in Research and Technology,
approximately 60 engineers & laboratory technicians divided into 3
teams.
' Manage the budget for the Materials Engineering department, approximately
$8 million gross annually.
Qualifications: SKILLS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
' PhD or ScD in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering or
Mechanical Engineering with at least 12 years work experience in research or
product development.
' Expertise in metallurgy, engine fluids, or catalyst technology.
' Technical knowledge of metals, ceramics, catalysts, chemistry, polymers,
and engine fluids (fuels, lubricants, coolants, urea)
' Experience managing cross-functional teams and direct reports.
' Financial management skills
' Experience using Six Sigma tools and methodology
Desirable:
' Experience with product development (bringing a product to market) and
integration of Materials Engineering into product development and design
' Familiarity and contacts with the Materials Engineering research community
including universities, national labs, and independent labs.
' Experience with structural and dynamic analysis and testing, modeling, and
other analysis led design tools.
