Description: Superconducting Linac Mechanical Engineer

Our Neutron Sciences Laboratory seeks applications for a Superconducting
Linac Mechanical Engineer.
Research at these facilities will involve the physical, chemical, materials,
biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to
2200 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and
universities
around the globe.The successful candidate will perform design, computation,
construction, installation, and commissioning of SNS superconducting linac
accelerator components, e.g., cryomodules, cryogenic vacuum and pressure
systems. Provides operation support to the accelerator and cryogenic
facilities in support of the reliability and safety objectives of the SNS.
Makes
measurements and analysis on equipment related to the SCL, central helium
liquifier (CHL), superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) facilities and
cryomodules.
Major duties and responsibilities:
1.. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in design, analysis, construction
and operation of cryomodules and related systems;
2.. Demonstrates knowledge and experience with large thermal-process
facilities, complex systems operations and related safety issues,
regulations and safe practices;
3.. Demonstrates knowledge of and participates in all activities of the
Group, including planning, installation, checkout, commissioning, and
operation of the SCL, CHL, SRF, and related cryogenic equipment, vacuum
systems and pressure systems;
4.. Performs measurements on CHL, SRF, cryogenic transfer lines, and
cryomodules;
5.. Develops, manages and operates SNS SRF facilities;
6.. Provides support in documenting and implementing the developed plans
within budgetary and schedule constraints;assists engineering team with
tasks or projects;
provides support during accelerator operation ,monitors failures &
recommends maintenance.
7.. Assists with maintaining 24/7 operation of the SCL and cryogenics
systems, requiring flexibility in working hours. Ensures compliance with
federal, state and local environmental, safety, health, and quality program
requirements;
Qualifications: Education/Experience+Skills:
BS or MS degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field with
at least 10 years of applicable technical experience in design,
construction, analysis and operation of
superconducting linac accelerator components; or an equivalent combination
of education and experience. Demonstrated knowledge of performance of
mechanical thermal systems, cryogenic engineering, and vacuum and pressure
systems. Demonstrated knowledge of accelerator systems and/or complex system
facility operations. Excellent communications skills. Knowledge of related
safety issues, regulations, and safe practices preferred.
